NH Now: Chris Pappas 5-28-20

Congressman Pappas Feels That Trump’s Handling of the COVID-19 Crisis Will Be a 2020 Presidential Election Issue.
“The Lack of Seriousness from the Administration from Day 1 Has Hampered Our Ability to Contain the Virus, Slow Its Spread, and to Save Lives.”

In a wide ranging interview with WKXL’s Chris Ryan, the Representative from New Hampshire’s First Congressional District, Chris Pappas, discusses the economic and health impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, whether wearing masks in public should be mandated in New Hampshire, how to control the spread of the Coronavirus in long term care facilities, what should be our country’s relationship with China, why the Trump Administration’s handling of COVID-19 will be a 2020 election issue, and what can be done to heal racial problems like the current situation in Minneapolis.

In general, Congressman Pappas is in favor of the gradual reopening phases which Governor Sununu is following. When he was asked whether wearing masks or face coverings in public should be mandated by the state, Chris Pappas suggests that the data supports that using such coverings decreases the spread of the disease.

Throughout the country, long term care facilities or nursing homes have been the front line of the front line in the war with this deadly virus. Congressman Pappas recommends that COVID testing of workers and residents should be done at least on a weekly basis to isolate and control the spread of the virus.

Congressman Pappas favors sanctions against China in reaction to their history of cheating on trade deals, theft of intellectual property, lying about the Coronavirus, and their human rights abuses in Hong Kong and against minority populations in China, such as the Uyghurs in Northwest China.
As the 2020 Presidential Election nears, the Congressman feels strongly that the Trump Administration will pay a price for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. Chris Pappas states that they were unprepared for this pandemic, downplayed its seriousness, and have lacked a comprehensive plan for dealing with the virus, or for getting the country back to work.

The recent death of an African American, George Floyd, who died while in Minneapolis police custody, has resulted in protests, riots, and calls for justice. Surveillance video of George Floyd’s death show a police officer kneeling on Floyd’s throat while he pleads that he can’t breathe. Congressman Pappas calls for the arresting officers to be prosecuted, and for all people to be treated as equals before the law. He feels that instances like this are opportunities for us to see each other as brothers and sisters.
